Mourn for Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky

We mourn for Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky, whose attendance at an evening dedicated to peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike, ended in their tragic deaths at the hands of a domestic terrorist. May their memories be for a blessing.

Advocacy for Israel, per se, is not the mission of our Caucus. Yet we cannot help but be deeply affected by the tragic events in the region. Nor can we turn a blind eye to the expressions of antisemitism, which are escalating in frequency and vitriol, on the right and left wings of the political spectrum, and on college campuses, since October 7, whether stemming from ignorance or from hate. The tragic shooting in our nation’s capital has shown that hateful words left unchecked lead to even more hateful deeds.

Our North Carolina Caucus is actively educating party members, faith leaders, and students about our mission: To help elect Democratic candidates at every level by contributing Jewish voices and values, creating a welcoming place for Jews, and strengthening the Democratic Party. Our Caucus is rapidly growing (a 25% increase since Jan 1!), adding to our sense of community and purpose during these challenging times.

On Tuesday we hosted a successful statewide hybrid in person/virtual discussion on the subject of Jewish Voices and Values in Government, featuring Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer. The attendees were fully engaged, and motivated to take action. When we strive together in the NCDPJC, we build a supportive community, and accomplish so much more than we could as individuals.

In closing, please keep Sarah and Yaron’s families in your thoughts. Do not hesitate to reach out to us with questions about the Caucus, or to seek resources that you may need to face this tragedy. (Contact Lisa Jewel at 704.962.1039 or lskjewel@gmail.com.)
